Reader (GRADER) Information
  • The payroll title for these positions is "Reader". However, the working title "Grader" more accurately describes duties and is used below.
  • Minimum eligibility requirements that must be met by start of quarter of Grader assignment:
    1. A grade of A- or higher in the same or equivalent course/course sequence of Grader assignment. If the course was taken at an institution other than UCSD, bring the transcript(s) showing the relevant chemistry courses completed (with grades) to York 4010 as soon as possible . A 3.0 overall GPA at UCSD, not counting transfer work.
    2. A minimum of 90 units completed or transferred into UCSD.
  • Responsibilities for Satisfactory Performance. Although responsibilities may vary by course, these are the sorts of duties the course professor may require of a Grader:
    1. Attend all Instructor-Grader meetings as arranged by course professor.Grade materials according to standards and guidelines set by course professor.Turn graded materials into designated person (e.g., course professor or TA) by established deadline.
    2. Assist with proctoring exams.
  • Performance Evaluations and Standards. Graders are evaluated by the course instructor.
  • Workload and Time Frame: The workload is typically 10 hours/week for lab courses (Chem 6BL and 100A). For all other courses, it will vary according to the needs of the course. These hours are arranged with the course instructor. Hours may be accrued in the 10-week quarter and finals week (see Schedule of Classes ).
  • Employment Information
    1. You will be contacted by email if you must attend a MANDATORY employee sign-up session.Graders (working title) are appointed as Readers (payroll title), in title codes 2500 and 2850, and are under a union contract between UCSD and the ASE/UAW. In 2005/2006, the pay rate for Reader title codes was $10.95/hour.Readers are paid bi-weekly for hours accrued each pay period. At the mandatory employment sign-up, Readers are given the payroll schedule and are told procedures for turning in time sheets to report hours worked. Names and addresses of all ASEs are released to the UAW each quarter. ASE/UAW membership dues or the agency fee (for those who choose not to become ASE/UAW members) will be deducted each month from the Reader paycheck.
    2. The amount of dues is 1.15% of gross Reader earnings; the agency fee is 0.92%.
