Summer 2008 DEADLINE TO APPLY: Monday, MAY 26
The Chemistry and Biochemistry Department has several openings for experienced TAs in Summer Chem courses. To apply, please read the following information carefully and submit your completed application to the Chem/Biochem Student Affairs Office by Monday, May 26.
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
- All students. Summer TAs, tutors, and graders must have previously served as a TA, tutor, and/or grader in a Chem course AND have completed the TA Training Seminar, Chem 195/500.
- Undergraduate Students. Minimum overall UC GPA of 3.0 or higher at time of appointment; 90+ units; grade of A- or higher in course to TA.
- Graduate Students. Two or more quarters of relevant upper-division work with a grade of A- or higher; one or more quarters of graduate level work with a grade of B+ or higher; passing score in relevant ACS written exam.
RESPONSIBILITIES FOR SATISFACTORY PERFORMANCE
Instructors will organize a TA/Tutor/Grader-Instructor meeting before or at the beginning of the session. Attendance is mandatory. At the meeting, the instructor will outline your specific duties for the course. Typically, these include:
- Attend all instructor-TA/grader meetings.
- Attend all lectures of the course they are TAing or tutoring.
- Lead one or more discussion or lab sections as agreed at the time of TA assignment (see TA and Tutor Section Assignments).
- Assist with grading and proctoring. Grade materials according to standards and guidelines set by course professor. Turn graded materials into designated person (e.g., course professor or TA) by established deadline.
- Hold office hours.
- Lab TAs must attend MANDATORY safety training and meetings.
- Be available the full duration of appointment (SS1: June 30 - August 2; SS2: August 4 - September 6).
Workload and Time Frame
The level of appointment and workload will be determined when assignments are made. All TA/Tutor/Graders must be available for the full duration of the session in which they are appointed (see above for dates). Most TA and Tutor appointments are 50% (20 hours/week average).
