Chemistry 6BL, 100A, 143A & 143AH (formerly 143AM)
ALL students in introductory chemistry lab classes are required to demonstrate an understanding of general laboratory safety and familiarity with the UCSD Undergraduate Chemistry Lab Rules. This applies to students in the classes listed above. Each student is responsible for studying these topics and passing the safety exam. Students who FAIL to demonstrate an understanding of general laboratory safety and familiarity with the UCSD Undergraduate Chemistry Lab Rules will be dropped from the course with a grade of "W."
The LAB SAFETY EXAM is normally given during the second lab meeting (CHEM 100A, 143A & 143AH) or the third lab meeting (CHEM 6BL). A PASSING SCORE on the exam fulfills this requirement. The exams normally consist of 25 multiple-choice questions, plus some non-test questions. In addition, each student will be asked to affirm that she/he has read the Undergraduate Lab Rules.
BRING WITH YOU: #2 pencils, erasers and your UCSD student ID card (EXTENSION STUDENTS use University ID or SSN); Scantron test forms will be provided. Students who report their ID numbers incorrectly will not receive credit. Petitions to take the exam at another time should be directed to the course Instructor; no makeup times are planned for unexcused absences. Students who FAIL the exam at the first administration may retest and remain in the class. Passing score or the second exam is 85%
TEST RESULTS will be available to students via the course Instructor's web site and (with the student's permission) posted at YORK4124. It is the responsibility of the student to obtain exam scores and, if necessary, present him/herself for the makeup exam. Safety exam scores may be used as part of a class grade; retesting may have no effect on a failing exam score for the purpose of assigning a course grade (see individual course Syllabus).
TO PREPARE:
- Attend your first lab meeting and listen attentively to TA's introductory information concerning the laboratory facility & the safety equipment available there.
- Study the Lab Safety Rules and the material outlined in Topics & Resources; many of the specific topics which will appear on the exam are covered there.
- Our brief Safety Notes are available online & at the safety lecture (see below).
- The SAFETY EXAM STUDY GUIDE contains information on the safety topics and practice questions.
- Check UCSD Environment, Health & Safety for general lab safety information.
- For those students who learn well in a lecture format, a SAFETY LECTURE is presented. In most quarters, the lecture is presented twice. The lecture is strongly recommended, but attendance is optional.
