Dear Faculty and Research Staff:

The Chemistry and Biochemistry Computing Facility (CBCF) will close its doors as a computing recharge facility effective June 30, 2007. Most of the computing services you have received by CBCF are now handled by central campus services. I have attached a listing of contacts for your convenience. The listing is also available at:

http://www-no.ucsd.edu/dnms.html.

Please note that chemhelp will stop accepting job requests after June 22, 2007. If you have questions, I am happy to meet with you or your lab staff to discuss what campus services would suit your computing environment.

For Linux and programming support, we have hired a high proficiency level scientific programmer/Linux systems administrator who will offer Linux environment & cluster systems support as well as scientific programming for faculty and their labs. This individual will also be responsible for our departmental servers. For faculty members who have a Linux/cluster environment, I encourage you to meet with me to discuss what options/services are available to you. Please note that these Linux services will be offered to faculty only after consultation with me and our new programmer in order to provide the correct services for your group.

For those few groups who remain on @chem email service, the department will provide an assisted email migration of your accounts to the campus email services this summer. We have been assured that your @chem email address can easily be retained with the campus email systems. Until then, please feel secure that the department will continue to administer your email.

It is extremely important that you please share this information with your lab staff. I urge you or your lab staff to meet with me if they have any questions or concerns. Chemistry and Biochemistry lab administrative assistantÂ’s computing will continue to be administered by Linh Vu in the business office via computing@chem.ucsd.edu. Many thanks!

Sincerely,

Marjorie A. Hardy
