Diversity Fellowship Recipients

AGEP Fellowships

The Alliance for Graduate Education and the Professoriate (AGEP) is an initiative of the National Science Foundation (NSF) designed to increase diversity among students who complete doctoral programs in science, engineering, and math and enter faculty careers. UCSD AGEP is a partner in this initiative to increase the number of underrepresented minority students (African American, Hispanic/Latino, Puerto Rican, Native American and, Native Pacific Islander) who enter graduate school in these disciplines. UCSD AGEP provides activities and support services for eligible undergraduate and graduate students. UCSD AGEP offers several opportunities for eligible undergraduate students as well as incoming and continuing graduate students to enhance their studies and receive funding.

Congratulations to our AGEP Fellows!

2011-12 - Leandro Gallo, Frankie Gonzalez, and Karina Kangas

Competitive Edge

The Competitive EDGE Summer Research Program is designed to give five selected graduate students an opportunity to begin research in their UCSD academic department the summer prior to the start of their graduate program. Participants are required to attend workshops which acclimate them to the university. In addition, these workshops provide an opportunity for participants to network with one another and build relationships. Workshop facilitators are members of the UCSD community and serve as faculty, staff or continuing graduate students in various academic fields. There is an orientation at the beginning of the summer program. This is a time when the participants meet OGS staff, each other and continuing graduate students. At the end of the program, the participants and their faculty mentors are invited to a Closing Luncheon wherein all participants are acknowledged for their involvement.

Congratulations to our Competitive Edge Fellows!

2010 Bouchet Graduate Honor Society Chapter

We are pleased to announce that Sujata Emani and David Gonzalez have both been selected to be members of the inaugural class of the Bouchet Graduate Honor Society Chapter here at UCSD. They are being recognized for their academic and personal excellence, passion to foster an environment of support and to serve as examples of scholarship, leadership, character, service and advocacy for students who have been traditionally underrepresented. All in honor of Dr. Alexander Bouchet who embodied such qualities and was the first African American doctoral recipient in the United States. Congratulations!

Diversity Resources

UC San Diego: Diversity Matters

UC San Diego is committed to diversity. Please visit this page for more information.

Cross-Cultural Center

The CCC offers programs and services specifically designed to reflect UCSD’s commitment to excellence, scholarship, and community through cross‐cultural interactions. The center’s focus areas include: faculty, staff, and student exchanges, educational material and resources, student outreach and retention activities, speakers, film series, community outreach, support and discussion groups, and leadership development.

Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Resource Center

The LGBT Resource Center at UCSD is a diverse, open and public space for all members of the university community to explore issues relating to sexual and gender identities, practices and politics. It develops student leadership, builds workplace equity, promotes academic research, and provides resources. The Center challenges existing definitions of variant genders and sexualities by engaging in community building on‐ and off‐campus. This Center sustains and develops visibility, sense of community, and knowledge of diverse queer people.

Women's Center

The Women’s Center provides education and support on gender issues affecting UCSD students, faculty, staff, and the community. The Center aims to advance women’s intellectual, professional, and personal goals, and to increase awareness of the issues affecting women and men of diverse backgrounds and experiences. It offers quiet spaces for study and meetings, support groups and workshops, and children’s play and care space (parent must arrange for supervision of their children at all times).

UCSD Chemistry & Biochemistry Society for Women in Graduate Studies (SWIGS)

The goals of our group are to generate constructive discussion on various issues, positively impact graduate student well-being, and foster professional development. We're a new group hoping to establish ourselves as a resource for women in the department. Contact Alissa (asasayam@ucsd.edu) for more information or to get on our mailing list. Hope to see you soon!
