Joshua Figueroa selected to receive the 2012 Camille Dreyfus Teacher-Scholar Award
Professor Joshua S. Figueroa has been selected by the Camille and Henry Dreyfus Foundation to receive a 2012 Camille Dreyfus Teacher-Scholar Award. The program supports the research and teaching careers of talented young faculty in the chemical sciences. Based on institutional nominations, the program provides discretionary funding to faculty members at an early stage in their careers. Criteria for selection include an independent body of scholarship attained within the first five years of their appointment as independent researchers and a demonstrated commitment to education, signaling the promise of continuing outstanding contributions to both research and teaching. The Camille Dreyfus Teacher-Scholar Awards Program provides an unrestricted research grant of $75,000. Figueroa earned the Camille and Henry Dreyfus New Faculty Award in 2007.

Prof. Joshua Figueroa wins 2012 DOE Early Career Research Program Award
Professor Joshua S. Figueroa's proposal "Bond Formation and Catalysis by Basemetal Unsaturated Isocyanides" has been selected by the Office of Basic Energy Sciences for a 2012 DOE Early Career Research Program Award. Figueroa has been a member of the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of California, San Diego since 2007.

Chancellor Fox to receive 2012 Othmer Gold Medal
Marye Anne Fox, Chancellor of the University of California, San Diego, and Professor in the UCSD Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, has been named the recipient of the 2012 Othmer Gold Medal. The Othmer Medal is given by the Chemical Heritage Foundation to honor individuals who have made multifaceted contributions to chemical and scientific heritage through outstanding activity in areas such as innovation, entrepreneurship, research education, public understanding, legislation, or philanthropy. The medal will be presented to Chancellor Fox on April 12 at the Chemical Heritage Foundation in Philadelphia. Chancellor Fox has served on the Foundation Board since 2002 and is Chair of the Scientific Affairs Committee.

James R. Arnold Memorial Tribute
To honor our friend and colleague, Jim Arnold, a memorial tribute is to be held at the University of California, San Diego Skaggs Pharmaceutical Sciences Building HSEC Auditorium at 2 pm on Saturday, May 5, 2012 (his birthday). Please mark your calendar for this special event. Professor Emeritus James Arnold passed away Friday, January 6, following a long illness. He was an internationally renowned geophysical chemist, member of the National Academy of Sciences (elected 1964),a founding member of the Department of Chemistry and the University of California, San Diego, the first Chair of the Department, and the holder of the first Harold C. Urey Chair. He was a valued colleague and will be missed. For further information, such as a map to the building or information about hotels nearby offering a UCSD discount, please contact Virginia Perry (vperry@ucsd.edu, tel: 858-534-0212, fax: 858-534-6693). This event is not sponsored by the Health Sciences Educational Center.

Jack Dixon elected to The Royal Society
Jack Dixon, Vice President and Chief Scientific Officer of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, is among the eight newly elected Foreign Members and 44 newly elected Fellows of The Royal Society. Said to be "one of the most influential biochemists of his generation," Dixon is also a Professor in the Departments of Pharmacology, Cellular and Molecular Medicine, and Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of California, San Diego. Founded in 1660, The Royal Society is a self-governing Fellowship of many of the world's most distinguished scientists drawn from all areas of science, engineering, and medicine.
