Students who are eligible for modifications, adjustments and other accommodations in their chemistry lecture or laboratory learning environments because of a disability must register with the Office for Students with Disabilities (OSD) and obtain an Authorization for Accommodation (AFA) letter.
1. What should you do after you receive your AFA letter from the OSD Office?
As early as possible in the academic quarter, you should deliver one copy of your AFA letter to the course instructor (to whom the letter is addressed), and another copy to our department OSD Academic Liaison, Alejandro Vasquez (Student Affairs Office, York 4010). To ensure that you receive eligible accommodations, discuss matters first with the primary faculty for the course. NOTE: Some faculty will provide for your accommodations themselves, and others will have you work directly with our OSD Academic Liaison. Policies and procedures related to accommodations are typically listed on course syllabi, and/or discussed at the start of a course. You are expected to be familiar with, and to follow, these guidelines.
2. How do you arrange for classroom or lab accommodations?
Accommodations that require adaptive technologies, alternative formats, interpreters or captionists, or note-taking may take time to process and will require the assistance of the OSD and other staff to implement. You are encouraged to bring these needs to the attention of the course instructor at the start of quarter, and earlier if possible.
3. How do you arrange for exam and quiz accommodations?
Students who are eligible for adaptive technology and alternative formats are able to have exams and quizzes administered by the OSD. All other types of accommodations (such as extended time) need to be arranged with faculty and/or our OSD Academic Liaison.
4. If your testing accommodations will be administered by the OSD Academic Liaison, what must you do?
If, in consultation with your course instructor, it is established that our OSD Academic Liaison will provide exam/quiz accommodations, you should take the following steps:
WE REQUIRE ADVANCE NOTICE OF A MINIMUM OF THREE BUSINESS DAYS PRIOR TO THE EXAM/QUIZ DATE TO ARRANGE ACCOMMODATIONS. We may not have the capability to meet late requests.
5. If your testing accommodations will be administered by the course instructor, what must you do?
Be sure to follow the course policies and expectations, and to send a timely reminder to the course instructor (1 week before, or as specified) each time an accommodation is required.
