CHEMISTRY MINOR (CH25)

Requirements for the Chemistry minor

  • Students who wish to minor in chemistry should have their programs approved before taking upper-division courses.
  • Lower division courses must be satisfied with course work.  Advanced placement credits will not be accepted toward the minor requirements.
  • The minimum GPA for the minor is 2.00 and all courses must be taken for a letter grade.
  • Students may not apply upper-division courses required by their major toward the minor. For example, a biology major may not count CHEM 140A-B toward both the major in biology and the minor in chemistry.
  • All courses counted toward the minor must be offered in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. Courses such as the BIBC 100, BIBC 102, BIBC 103 and BIMM 100 will not be allowed to count toward the minor in chemistry.

Requirements for the Minor

Students will need to complete three lower division lecture courses and one lower-division laboratory course (CHEM 6A-B-C and CHEM 7L) plus a minimum of five upper-division courses, including at least one laboratory course. This upper-division course work must be completed at UCSD and must be focused in a field of chemistry, including physical, inorganic, organic, environmental chemistry or biochemistry. Some examples would include:

  1. CHEM 140A-B-C, 143A and 154 (Organic)
  2. CHEM 140A-B-C, 143A and 143B (Organic)
  3. CHEM 114A-B-C-D and 108 (Biochemistry)
  4. CHEM 114A-B-C, 108, and 116 (Biochemistry)
  5. CHEM 120A-B, 123, 125 and 143A (Inorganic)
  6. CHEM 131, 132, 133, 100B/BL and 105A (Physical)
  7. CHEM 114A-B-C, 118 and 143A (Pharmacological)
  8. CHEM 149A-B, 173, 100B/BL and 143A (Environmental)

Students may not mix sequences or take other courses without prior approval.  For any variations, please declare the minor online and enter your proposed courses. It will be reviewed by faculty, and the decision made will inform you of if your courses are acceptable.
