Figueroa Group Introduces MOFs with Zero-Valent-Metal Structural Sites

In a recent publication in the Journal of the American Chemical Society, the Figueroa Group and collaborators from Cornell University reported a Metal-Organic Framework (MOF) featuring zero-valent metal centers as the structural units. Inorganic/organic hybrid materials such as MOFs rely on strong metal-ligand bonds to achieve structural integrity and permanent porosity for applications in gas separation and catalysis. Ionic bonding between ligands and metals traditionally provides the requisite strength for framework stability. However, ionic bonding also requires the presence of oxidized metal centers, meaning some of their electrons cannot be use for subsequent chemical reactions. By exploiting the strong bonds between isocyanides and low-valent metal centers, the team successfully prepared a porous network material from zero-valent nickel centers featuring four neutral isocyanide ligands. These new solid-state materials hold promise as catalysts in a manner similar to molecular organometallic complexes.

Professor Mike Burkart named 2017 AAAS Fellow

The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), the largest general science organization in the United States and publisher of the journal Science, has awarded the distinction of fellow to six UC San Diego professors including Mike Burkart, professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry. Burkart was recognized by AAAS “for his distinguished contributions to the field of natural product biosynthesis and chemical biology—particularly for the development of tools for enzyme activity and structural elucidation.”

Xiong and Paesani groups have joint experimental-theoretical study published in Science Advances

In a joint experimental-theoretical study published in Science Advances, the Xiong and Paesani groups have demonstrated conformation-specific electron transfer at buried interfaces between an organic polymer semiconductor film and a gold substrate by observing the first dynamical electric-field-induced vibrational sum-frequency generation spectra. The measurements unequivocally show that, although the gold/polymer interfaces are prepared without deliberate alignment control, electrons can still be directly transferred from the Fermi level of the gold substrate to the LUMO of the organic semiconductor. Theoretical calculations performed at the density functional theory level ascribe the observed direct electron transfer to a sub-ensemble of flat-lying polymer configurations in which the electronic orbitals are delocalized across the interface. The observation of direct electron transfer at complex interfaces as well as the insights gained into the relationship between molecular conformations and electron dynamics will have implications for implementing novel direct electron transfer in energy materials.

Brian León named 2017 Chancellor’s Award for Postdoctoral Scholar

Brian León named 2017 Chancellor’s Award for Postdoctoral Scholar. As a UC Chancellor’s Fellow, Brian will be studying the biosynthetic pathway of two biologically active natural products. These studies will have a particular emphasis on studying the specific gene responsible for the key complexity-generating step in their respective biosynthetic pathways. Identification, and isolation of the gene and enzyme will allow for a characterization of these enzymes to understand how they catalyze these transformations.

Vicki Grassian named 2018 Award for Incorporation of Sustainability into Chemistry Education

Vicki Grassian, Associate Dean in the Division of Physical Sciences, has been named a recipient of the 2018 Award for Incorporation of Sustainability into Chemistry Education which is sponsored by the American Chemical Society’s Committee on Environmental Improvement. She is being recognized for her leadership in articulating the roles of both chemistry research and chemical education in sustainability. She will present her award talk at the 255th American Chemical Society National Spring Meeting in New Orleans, Louisiana this March. Her presentation entitled “Awareness and Promotion of the Roles of Chemistry and Chemical Education in Sustainability” will focus on the importance of chemistry in sustainability, the myriad ways in which chemists can play a role in sustainability, and public awareness of the role of chemistry in sustainability.

Distinguished Professor Andy McCammon will receive the 2017 Russell M. Pitzer Award in Theoretical Chemistry, given by Ohio State University. Gianneschi, Cohen, & Paesani groups observe “breathing” at the lattice level in porous nanomaterials

In a study published as a Communication in the Journal of the American Chemical Society, the Gianneschi, Cohen, and Paesani groups have characterized, for the first time, the “breathing behavior” of metal-organic frameworks at the lattice level through the combination of in situ environmental transmission electron microscopy (ETEM) and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations.

Professor Michael Burkart name Teddy Traylor Faculty Scholar 2017-2022

Mike Burkart has been named the Teddy Traylor Faculty Scholar in Organic Chemistry for 2017-2022. Scholar Awards in each of the department’s four divisions were inaugurated in 2006. Each award is to be held for a 5-year term, not immediately renewable. Cliff Kubiak Wins ACS Award in Organometallic Chemistry

The American Chemical Society (ACS) selected Clifford P. Kubiak, distinguished professor of chemistry and biochemistry at UC San Diego, as the 2018 recipient of its National Award in Organometallic Chemistry (“Award”). The Award, established in 1983 by the Dow Chemical Company Foundation, recognizes advancements having a major impact on research in organometallic chemistry. Professor Kubiak’s selection was based on his innovative research focused on chemically producing energy through artificial photosynthesis, catalysis and electrochemistry. International Solar Fuels Conference Hosted by UC San Diego

More than 300 researchers from around the world traveled to UC San Diego for the second biannual International Solar Fuels (ISF-2) Conference. The international meeting, held July 6-10, 2017, showcased new biological and chemical approaches to utilizing solar energy for direct fuel production. Organizers of the first IFS Conference, held two years ago in Uppsala, Sweden, chose UC San Diego as the venue for the ISF-2 Conference because of its leadership in algae biofuels and artificial photosynthesis research led by UC San Diego Professors' Stephen Mayfield (molecular biology) and Clifford Kubiak (chemistry and biochemistry), respectively. Mayfield and Kubiak also co-organized and co-hosted ISF-2.

Marc Riera-Riambau receives 2017 Molecular Sciences Software Institute Software Fellowship. The Molecular Sciences Software Institute will serve as a nexus for science, education, and cooperation serving the worldwide community of computational molecular scientists – a broad field including of biomolecular simulation, quantum chemistry, and materials science. The Institute will spur significant advances in software infrastructure, education, standards, and best-practices that are needed to enable the molecular science community to open new windows on the next generation of scientific Grand Challenges, ranging from the simulation of intrinsically disordered proteins associated with a range of diseases to the design of new catalysts vital to the global chemical industry and climate change. The award will enable the computational molecular science community to work together to leverage its diverse capabilities that will reduce or eliminate the gulf that currently delays by years the practical realization of theoretical innovations. Professor Wei Xiong received 2017 DARPA Director’s fellowship

Prof. Wei Xiong received the prestigious 2017 DARPA Director’s fellowship. This is an award on top of the 2015 DARPA Young Faculty Award, which only a few best scientists from the YFA recipients were chosen by the DARPA Director for this fellowship. Prof. Xiong and his group are going to develop interface sensitive ultrafast molecular microscope to visualize energy material interfaces, with chemical, conformation, temporal and spatial resolutions. This research will provide fundamental molecular physics insights on how complex energy materials works.

UC San Diego Chemists Create the Ultimate Natural Sunscreen

Chemists, materials scientists and nanoengineers at UC San Diego have created what may be the ultimate natural sunscreen. In a paper published in the American Chemical Society journal ACS Central Science, they report the development of nanoparticles that mimic the behavior of natural melanosomes, melanin-producing cell structures that protect our skin, eyes and other tissues from the harmful effects of ultraviolet radiation. “Basically, we succeeded in making a synthetic version of the nanoparticles that our skin uses to produce and store melanin and demonstrated in experiments in skin cells that they mimic the behavior of natural melanosomes,” said Nathan Gianneschi, a professor of chemistry and biochemistry, materials science and engineering and nanoengineering at UC San Diego, who headed the team of researchers. The achievement has practical applications. “Defects in melanin production in humans can cause diseases such as vitiligo and albinism that lack effective treatments,” Gianneschi added. Tavina Offutt named 2016-2017 UC San Diego Bouchet Graduate Honor Society Member

Tavina Offutt named 2016-2017 UC San Diego Bouchet Graduate Honor Society Member. Tavina Offutt is a doctoral candidate in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of California, San Diego. Her dissertation work is centered on gaining insight into the dynamics of proteins that are implicated in cancer, and harnessing this knowledge to the end of drug discovery. Since proteins are dynamic in nature, it is important to understand these dynamic characteristics in targeting them with drug molecules. Computational tools such as of molecular dynamics (MD) simulations can provide snapshots of how the atoms within the protein move over time. These MD conformations can provide insight into the function of proteins, and reveal novel “druggable” pockets. Her research utilizes MD to model the flexibility of two important cancer targets: protein kinases and p53. Using these models, her research assesses if including different MD snapshots enhances virtual screening against potential protein kinase inhibitors. She also uses MD to understand how p53 behaves when cancerous, and how its normal function is restored in the presence of a drug candidate. Her long-term goal is to understand how the conformational landscapes of proteins under normal conditions and in diseased states differ. Jennie Chen Wins 2017 Exemplary Staff Employee of the Year Award

Jennie Chen, a financial analyst in the business office of the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, is the recipient of a 2017 Exemplary Staff Employee of the Year Award. This annual campus award recognizes professional and support staff from across all Vice Chancellor and Health System areas who have demonstrated exemplary service and made other significant contributions to the UC San Diego and San Diego communities. Since joining the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry in 2013, Chen has provided exceptional contributions in building relationships, leadership and university practices. She has managed complex financial projects with integrity, excellence and commitment, going above and beyond requirements to ensure her faculty members have the information they need to make decisions affecting their laboratories, staff and students. “Jennie has been at the forefront of developing and implementing financial best practices in department and has played a key role in simplifying and streamlining business processes,” said Steven Ford, Chief Operating Officer for the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. “Always thinking about the needs of those around her, she shares her expertise with fund managers in the department, giving them the tools and knowledge they need to succeed.” In addition to her outstanding fund management within the department, Chen serves as a FinancialLink instructor and member of the FinancialLink Advisory Group, where she contributes to the development of university-wide financial applications. UC San Diego Receives $7.5 Million to Develop Innovative Uses for Melanin

A team of scientists from UC San Diego and two other universities has received a five year, $7.5 million grant from the U.S. Department of Defense to unravel the fundamental properties of melanins, a family of natural pigments found in skin, hair, eyes and even the plumage of brightly colored birds. The basic research effort will focus on elucidating the biochemical pathways that lead to the production of melanins in a range of organisms—compounds that efficiently absorb ultraviolet light and protect skin cells in humans—and gain a better understanding of the chemistry and morphology of melanin polymers at the molecular scale, nanoscale, micrometer and at the macroscale. The project is being funded by the Air Force Office of Scientific Research, under the Defense Department’s Multidisciplinary Research Initiative, or MURI program, with the goal of using these natural pigments to develop new kinds of advanced materials. “Melanin is a ubiquitous natural material that has so far been underutilized in materials science and technological applications,” said Nathan Gianneschi, a professor of chemistry and biochemistry, materials science and engineering and nanoengineering at UC San Diego, who heads the research team. “But this polymer has a unique blend of properties, including strong ultraviolet and gamma radiation absorbance, a high refractive index, material toughness, high conductivity, magnetism and a high metal-binding capacity.” By unraveling the basic biology, chemistry and structural properties of melanins at multiple length scales, the team plans over the next three years to provide the foundation for the development of melanin-based synthetic materials for a wide range of applications. “We hope this basic research effort will eventually lead to the establishment of new methods of assembly to create functional arrays and structures that can be integrated into materials, providing them with unprecedented new optical, infrared, magnetic and biochemical properties,” said Gianneschi. Other melanin-based materials, the researchers added, could include new kinds of adaptive camouflage or detection systems, protective coatings that make structures resistant to ultraviolet and gamma radiation, and bioremediation devices that employ the ability of melanins to bind heavy metals. Other members of the research team from UC San Diego are Michael Burkart, professor of chemistry and biochemistry; Dimitri Deheyn, a marine biologist at Scripps Institution of Oceanography; and Jeffrey Rinehart, an assistant professor of chemistry and biochemistry. Ali Dhinojwala from the University of Akron and Arthi Jayaraman from the University of Delaware round out the multidisciplinary team. The research team will collaborate with Wendy Goodson from the Air Force Research Laboratory and Matthew Shawkey, an associate professor of biology at the University of Ghent in Belgium, who were awarded an additional $1.25 million from the Air Force Office of Scientific Research for a cooperative research project. Wei Xiong was awarded by AFOSR the Young Investigator Research Program (YIP) Award

Wei Xiong was awarded by the Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR) the Young Investigator Research Program (YIP) Award. The YIP is open to scientists and engineers at research institutions across the United States who received Ph.D. or equivalent degrees in the last five years and who show exceptional ability and promise for conducting basic research. The objective of this program is to foster creative basic research in science and engineering, enhance early career development of outstanding young investigators, and increase opportunities for the young investigators to recognize the Air Force mission and the related challenges in science and engineering. Professor Joshua Figueroa receives 2017 Alexander von Humboldt Fellowship

Professor Joshua Figueroa has been awarded a 2017 Alexander von Humboldt Fellowship for Experienced Researchers. Professor Neal Devaraj receives 2017 HFSP Award

Professor Neal Devaraj has been awarded a 2017 The Human Frontier Science Program (HFSP) research grant. HFSP supports novel, innovative and interdisciplinary basic research focused on the complex mechanisms of living organisms. Research is funded at all levels of biological complexity from biomolecules to the interactions between organisms. Prof. Devaraj’s lab will collaborate with an international team of researchers in Spain and Japan to develop synthetic cells containing artificial cytoskeletons. Worldwide, 30 grants were awarded from a total of 1073 letters of intent. Professor Kamil Godula Named 2017 Cottrell Scholar

Prof. Kamil Godula has been named a 2017 Cottrell Scholar by the Research Corporation for Science Advancement. Godula was honored for his research program, “Harnessing the Mechanobiology of the Glycocalyx to Influence Stem Cell Specification.” “The Cottrell Scholar program champions the very best early career teacher-scholars in chemistry, physics and astronomy by providing these significant discretionary awards,” said Silvia Ronco, the program’s senior director. Six early-career faculty members at the University of California San Diego have won prestigious 2017 Sloan Research Fellowships for achievements that mark them as the nation’s future leaders in science and technology. The campus’ six new fellows—which represent the biological and physical sciences, as well as engineering—were among only 126 researchers from 60 colleges and universities who received the honor this year. Professor Joel Yuen-Zhou Receives NSF CAREER Award

The National Science Foundation (NSF) selected Joel Yuen-Zhou, Assistant Professor of Chemistry & Biochemistry at UC San Diego as a recipient of its NSF CAREER Award. This prestigious five-year award supports the early career-development activities of those teacher-scholars who most effectively integrate research and education within the context of the mission of their organization. The Award will support Yuen-Zhou’s research in molecular polaritonics and the resultant new opportunities for spectroscopy and control of charge and energy transport.
