Wollman Lab Researchers Determine Dynamic Responsiveness of Biochemical Signaling Networks

Professor Roy Wollman's Lab in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at UC San Diego conducts research aimed at understanding biological signaling networks and the underlying principles that govern signal transduction. In a recently completed collaborative study, the Wollman Lab, along with researchers from UCLA, UC Davis, the San Diego Center for Systems Biology, and UC San Diego's Bioengineering Department and BioCircuits Institute, determined signaling dynamics enable cells to effectively distinguish signals from extrinsic noise substantially increasing the accuracy of biochemical signaling networks. Their research has been published in the journal Science (12/12/14 Issue) and was also featured in the online edition of The San Diego Union Tribune on 12/12/14. Tukey Researchers Find Liquid Soap Additive Causes Cancer

Researchers from Professor Robert Tukey's Superfund Research Center (SRC) at UC San Diego in collaboration with Professor Bruce Hammock's SRC at UC Davis have determined long-term exposure to Triclosan, an antimicrobial commonly found in soaps, shampoos, toothpastes and many other household items causes liver fibrosis and cancer in laboratory mice. The team's research was featured in the online editions of Time magazine on 11/17/14 and Chemical & Engineering News on 11/24/14; and their research paper has been published in the 11/17/14 early edition of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. UC San Diego's ACSSA Receives Outstanding Student Chapter Award

Toor Lab Reveals How Splicing 'Ties the Knot'

Within our cells illegible sections of genes known as introns are removed by splicing to produce coherent messages used as directions for making proteins. These excised introns have a unique branched circular shape known as lariats. Researchers in Professor Toor's lab have observed for the first time at atomic resolution how these ubiquitous lariat molecules are formed. Their report was published in the journal NATURE on October 9, 2014.

Hermann Lab Finds Hepatitis C & Seneca Valley Viral Switches Share a Shape

Hermann Lab researchers, who are seeking small molecules potentially suitable as inhibitor drugs against pathogenic viruses, have determined the molecular structure of the viral switch in the Seneca Valley virus matches the L-shaped switch in the Hepatitis C virus. Their report was published in the online edition of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences on 10/27/2014.

Devaraj Lab Triggers Non-enzymatic Cell Membrane Assembly

Professor Devaraj's Research Group determined that a self-driven reaction, through a process called native chemical ligation, can spontaneously assemble phospholipid membranes like those that enclose cells. Their report was published in the online edition of Angewandte Chemie (10/24/2014).

Pharmaceutical Companies to Share Data for Drug Design via New UC San Diego-Led Resource

Pharmaceutical companies will collaborate with researchers at UC San Diego to provide previously unreleased proprietary data for drug discovery through a new $3.7 million effort funded by the National Institutes of Health. The project, which is led by principal investigators Rommie Amaro & Victoria Feher from the Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry and Dr. Michael Gilson from the Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, includes a major subcontract to Rutgers University, directed by Dr. Stephen K. Burley of the Research Collaboratory for Structural Bioinformatics Protein Data Bank.

Perrin Lab Produces First "Naked" Aryl Anion in Solution

Professor Perrin and graduate student, Gabriel J. Reyes-Rodriguez have discovered the first "naked" aryl anion in solution-a carbanion not linked to counterions or stabilized by hydrogen bonding. Small naked carbanions have been created and studied in the gas phase before, but never in solution; the discovery provides a previously unknown type of species in solution for testing the relation between molecular structure and reactivity.

William E. Moerner, Former UCSD Chemist Wins Nobel Prize

William E. Moerner, one of three scientists who this week were named winners of the 2014 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, first applied his Nobel Prize-winning discovery to biological problems while working in the basement of Urey Hall as a professor of chemistry and biochemistry at UC San Diego from 1995 to 1998.

Prof. Charles Perrin to be Awarded James Flack Norris Award

Prof. Charles L. Perrin has been named the recipient of the 2015 James Flack Norris Award in Physical Organic Chemistry, sponsored by the Northeastern Division of the American Chemical Society. The award is based on "his insight, rigorous analysis, and understanding of mechanisms and reactive intermediates". The formal presentation will take place on Tuesday, March 24, 2015, during the 249th ACS National Meeting in Denver, CO.

Sugar mimic guides stem cells toward neural fate

Long chains of sugars dangle from proteins on the surface of embryonic stem cells and play an important role in how the cells develop into specific cell types. Kamil Godula, an assistant professor of chemistry and biochemistry, and his research group have now synthesized a molecular mimic of these sugar-decorated proteins that helps direct mouse embryonic stem cells down the path toward nerve cells they report in the Journal of the American Chemical Society. The researchers hope others can easily adopt their method to explore how these cell surface sugars influence stem cell differentiation. Professor Michael Sailor Contributes to Pacific Northwest National Labs Project

Professor Michael Sailor contributes his expertise to the Pacific Northwest National Lab (PPNL) led project to increase battery storage capacity in laptops, and other electric devices. The project led by PNNL used Prof. Sailors method of creating a porous silicon by placing thin sheets in a chemical bath to carve our tiny holes throughout the material and then coating the result with a thin layer of conductive carbon to make their electrodes.

Prof. Kimberly Prather Selected as a 2014 Faculty Research Lecturer Award

The Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry is happy to announce that The Committee on Senate Awards has selected Prof. Kimberly Prather as a 2014 Faculty Research Lecturer Award. This designation was confirmed by the Representative Assembly at the June 3, 2014 meeting. Only two awards are made each year for the entire campus, one for the Sciences and one for the Arts/Humanities/Social Sciences. Why Distant Dust Storms Matter to California Rainfall

A recent KQED radio interview explaining why distant dust storms matter to California rainfall was given by UC San Diego Distinguished Chair in Atmospheric Chemistry Kimberly Prather, Bill Lapenta, who runs the weather forecasting division of the National Weather Service, and Marty Ralph, Director of the Center for Western Weather and Water Extremes at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. Scientists are trying to understand why some storms unload lots of rain and snow in California and others don't. Theyre finding it could be linked to dust storms thousands of miles away.

Eric Chen wins the Intel Science Talent Search

Eric Chen, a senior at Canyon Crest Academy and a volunteer in the lab of Prof. Rommie Amaro, won the top award in the prestigious Intel Science Talent Search contest along with $100,000 in scholarship money with his research into potential new drugs to prevent influenza outbreaks. Sometimes called the high school version of the Nobel Prize, the Intel science talent search is one of the oldest and most prestigious pre-college national science and math competition in the country. This years competition attracted nearly 1,800 entries. Chen was recently interviewed by <a target="_blank" href="http://www.cbs8.com/story/24955174/local-teen-takes-top-honors-in-leading- science-and-math-competition ">Channel 8.</a>

Dean Thiemens awarded Albert Einstein Professorship from the Chinese Academy of Sciences

Distinguished Professor Mark Thiemens, Dean of the Physical Sciences Division, has been selected to receive an Albert Einstein Visiting Professorship from the Chinese Academy of Sciences. It is one of the People's Republic of China's highest awards. It is given to those working at the very frontiers of science. Other recipients this year include Professors Martin Karplus, Robert Grubbs, and K.C. Nicolau. The award will include giving lectures in several cities in China.

Jeffrey Brodin, a recent graduate from the Tezcan Group, has been selected as a 2014 ACS Young Investigator of Inorganic Chemistry. He has been invited to present his work at the 248th National ACS meeting in San Francisco (Young Investigator Symposium) this Fall. This selection attests to Brodin's accomplishments as a graduate student at UCSD. Akif Tezcan To Receive SBIC Early Career Award

The Society of Biological Inorganic Chemistry has selected F. Akif Tezcan to receive its Early Career Award for 2014. The award is given to an early career scientist (no more than 15 years post-Ph.D. at the nomination deadline) who has already accomplished distinguished research in biological inorganic chemistry. Tezcan is an associate professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of California, San Diego.

Surface of the Sea is a Sink for Nitrogen Oxides at Night

Nitrogen oxides that build up in polluted air are taken up by the surface of the sea at night. The ocean removes about 15 percent of these chemicals overnight along the coast, a team of atmospheric chemists reports in the early online edition of the <a target="_blank" href="http://www.pnas.org/content/early/recent"> Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences</a> the week of March 3. Nitrogen oxides, formed by the burning of fossil fuels, generate photochemical smog. Atmospheric chemists would like to account for the fates of these molecules in a kind of budget that identifies their sources and sinks - ways in which they are removed from the air. "One often neglected path is reaction at the surface of the sea," said Tim Bertram, an assistant professor of chemistry at the University of California, San Diego, who led the research.

Sheila Kennedy wins 2014 Fawcett CHAS Award

Sheila Kennedy, C.H.O., Safety Coordinator for the Teaching Laboratories in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at UC San Diego, has been selected to receive the 2014 ACS Division of Chemical Health and Safety Howard Fawcett Award in recognition of her contributions, innovations and creativity in assisting students with disabilities who are taking chemistry (and other) laboratory courses. Her efforts have enabled students with disabilities to better experience, learn and appreciate laboratory chemistry. The ACS Division of Chemical Health and Safety presents this award each year to recognize outstanding contributions to the science, technology, education and communication of chemical health and safety. Douglas Collins has been selected as one of three Inamori Fellows for 2014. The Inamori Fellowship Program at UC San Diego supports our best and brightest graduate students who will ensure the future of humanity through a balance of the scientific process and human spirit. SDSC Team Develops Multi-scale Simulation Software for Chemistry Research

Researchers at the San Diego Supercomputer Center at the University of California, San Diego, have developed software that greatly expands the types of multi-scale QM/MM (mixed quantum and molecular mechanical) simulations of complex chemical systems that scientists can use to design new drugs, better chemicals, or improved enzymes for biofuels production. A paper outlining the research, titled <a target="_blank" href="http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/jcc.23444/abstract;jsessionid=AB19F243F5786606665C241F9C6E97F4.f01t03">An Extensible Interface for QM/MM Molecular Dynamics Simulations with AMBER"</a> and conducted by members of the Walker Molecular Dynamics Lab (WMD) at SDSC, was featured on the cover of the January 15th issue of the Journal of Computational Chemistry. QM/MM simulations are computationally very demanding compared to purely classical MM simulations, said Ross C. Walker, an SDSC research professor and adjunct associate professor in UC San Diego's Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry.

Protein Array Guides Nanocrystal Growth

In a <a target="_blank" href="http://www.pnas.org/content/early/2014/02/05/1319866111"> PNAS article</a> highlighted in <a target="_blank" href="http://cen.acs.org/articles/92/i7/Protein-Array-Guides-Nanocrystal-Growth.html"> C&E News,</a> Prof. Akif Tezcan, graduate student Jeffrey D. Brodin and co-workers build on their earlier work to demonstrate that that a designed protein arranged into metal-directed 1- and 2-dimensional arrays becomes much more stable to heat and organic solvents upon self-assembly and that its light-driven redox activity can be used to control inorganic nanocrystal growth.

Jeffrey Rinehart joins our inorganic chemistry division in the fall of 2014. He is currently an Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Post-doctoral Research Fellow at the University of Washington. Dr. Rinehart earned his Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley in 2010.

Chancellor Emerita Fox to receive 2014 Clark Kerr Award

<a target="_blank" href="http://academic-senate.berkeley.edu/awards/clark-kerr-award">The Berkeley Division of the Academic Senate has announced</a> that Dr. Marye Anne Fox of the University of California, San Diego (UCSD), will receive its 2014 Clark Kerr Award for Distinguished Leadership in Higher Education. The award was created in 1968 as a tribute to the leadership and legacy of President Emeritus Kerr. It recognizes an individual who has made an extraordinary and distinguished contribution to the advancement of higher education. The award will be presented at a private ceremony on the Berkeley campus on March 5th. Dr. Fox is chancellor emerita and distinguished professor of chemistry and biochemistry at UCSD, one of the world's leading public research universities. She served as the 7th chancellor (and the first woman chancellor) of UCSD from 2004 to 2012. She has previously held similar named or endowed titles at both the University of Texas and at North Carolina State University before moving to California.

Distinguished Professor Susan Taylor wins Chancellor's Associates Faculty Excellence Award

Distinguished Professor Susan Taylor, who holds appointments in the Departments of Chemistry and Biochemistry and of Pharmacology, has won the 2013-14 Chancellor's Associates Faculty Award for Excellence in Research in Science and Engineering. These awards are given annually to deserving members of the UC San Diego faculty and consist of a citation and honorarium. Presentations of the awards will be made at the Chancellor's Associates Faculty Excellence Awards Ceremony.

Rapid advancement earned by Prof. Xile Hu

Xile Hu, who received a Ph.D. degree in inorganic chemistry from UCSD in December 2004, working with Karsten Meyer, was promoted to associate professor (with tenure) at the highly prestigious Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne (EPFL) in Switzerland. Prof. Hu is the founder and director of the Laboratory of Inorganic Synthesis and Catalysis. His laboratory is developing catalysts made of earth-abundant elements for chemical transformations pertinent to synthesis, energy, and sustainability.

Energy for the RNA world

A molecule called trimetaphosphate, or TMP, may have helped to power the RNA world, a proposed stage in the early evolution of life that existed before DNA emerged to store the codes for protein enzymes that catalyze biochemical reactions. Some RNA molecules, called ribozymes, can catalyze chemical reactions like protein enzymes do. Prof. Ulrich Müller and biochemistry graduate student Janina Moretti have created a ribozyme that can use TMP to chemically activate RNA 5'-ends. This or a similar chemical activation is essential for RNA polymerization and thereby for the self-replication of RNA-based organisms they report in <a target="_blank"href="http://nar.oxfordjournals.org/content/early/2014/01/21/nar.gkt1405.full">Nucleic Acids Research.</a>This research was funded by NASA.

Chemists image dynamics of a four-atom reaction

Chemical reactions proceed so fast its hard to capture the moves atoms make as they break and reform chemical bonds. "Once particles collide, everything takes place within a few picoseconds. Usually the best we can do is prepare the reactants and collect the products after the reaction is done," says Robert Continetti, professor of chemistry at UC San Diego. Now, using a unique experimental approach, Continetti's group has teased out the intermediate chemical pathways through which a reaction proceeds and identified how energy is distributed among its products. Their results, along with confirmation by a quantum mechanical model developed by Hua Guo's group at the University of New Mexico, are published in the early online edition of Science January 9. Rico Otto, Amelia Ray and Jennifer Daluz in Continetti's group at UC San Diego completed the experimental work, and Jianyi Ma and Jun Li in Guo's group at the University of New Mexico developed the theoretical model of this system. The Department of Energy supported this work.

Biosynthesis Captured in Motion

Chemists have caught molecules in the act of biosynthesis, revealing an animated view of how a fundamental piece of cellular machinery operates. The system they observed, a critical metabolic pathway, generates fatty acids, essential components of fats and structures such as cell membranes. <a target="_blank"href="http://www.nature.com/nature/journal/v505/n7483/full/nature12810.html">Nature</a> published their findings in the early online edition December 22. "We need to decipher the communication code, to understand how proteins work with each other on a molecular level," said Michael Burkart, a biological chemist at the University of California, San Diego, who led the project in partnership with Shiou-Chuan (Sheryl) Tsai, a biochemist at UC Irvine. Professor Charles Perrin appointed to the Murray Goodman Endowed Chair

We are proud to announce that Distinguished Professor Charles L. Perrin has been named the inaugural holder of the Murray Goodman Endowed Chair in Chemistry and Biochemistry. Established in 2004, it was the 101st endowed chair at UCSD. Professor Perrin was chosen for his research efforts, teaching qualities, committee participation and public service. His research record is characterized by fundamental studies of exceptional quality and rigor that broadly impact all areas of science including bioorganic chemistry. His interaction with students and colleagues has earned him the admiration of his peers worldwide. The Chair was created in honor of Professor Murray Goodman, since deceased, who was one of the top scientists in the world carrying out research on peptides and peptidiomimetics.
