Chemistry Connections for Community College Students at the University of California, San Diego (4 Cs at UCSD)

Are you a community college student from San Diego County who is interested in chemical research?  We welcome your application to participate in our newly funded NSF-REU program! 

Program Overview

Our '4cs @ UCSD' program offers intensive research experience in the chemical sciences for 10 first-year students from local two-year colleges. No prior research experience required. Students will work closely with faculty and graduate students on research projects related to their interests.

Program Goals

  1. Broaden participation of underrepresented groups in undergraduate research.
  2. Facilitate the transition of community college students to baccalaureate and graduate programs.
  3. Engage in effective mentoring for inclusive research training.
  4. Expand access to academic resources, fostering collaborations between UC San Diego and local two-year colleges.

Program Timeline

  • Orientation in late Spring
  • Summer and Fall research placement
  • Enrichment activities spanning to the next Spring

Program Features

  • Extended research experience: 10-week summer and 10-week fall apprenticeship
  • Enrichment activities: Workshops, seminars, field trips, and socials
  • Mentorship and community building: Access to UCSD and community college faculty
  • Financial Support: $5000 stipend for summer, $1000 for academic year, parking passes provided
  • Additional opportunities: Academic credit through UCSD Extension (fees not covered)
